Hello, There is a Disston stamp somewhere underneath all of that rust!! I am going to repair the cracked handle and try to give it a new life. Any suggestions on cleaning the blade?? Thanks, Lou

I'm no expert by any means, but I would soak the brass in vinegar and then use fine steel wool on it--lightly.
The steel--wash it with hot soap and water and a nylon bristle brush.  Dry it, then put very light oil on it for a day or two.  Then use steel wool on the back and a razor blade scraper on the plate.  See where that gets you. 
It will take time, so don't get in a hurry.
But I'm sure there are guys on here that know more than I do.

Hello, Northwoods. I am a firm believer in soap, hot water, and a nylon bristle brush for cleaning rusty steel. I just never tried it on a saw blade!!! Well, here we go!! Thanks, Lou

Lou, I don't do saws very often but when I do I have used some of the techniques that Nothwoods suggested. A single edge razor blade with the corners knocked off on the grinder does a good job. 320 grit wet/dry sandpaper used with a sanding block and mineral spirits as a lubricant gets a lot of the crud off and leaves a decent finish. The sanding block will "bridge" the etch so you don't erase it. Good luck!!
