I have gotten some nice figured wood bits on the cheap at times.  The thrift stores end up with old softball and bowling trophies, many of them have  blocks of walnut, oak, or something exotic in them, have gotten 3 trophies for a dollar.   Also had 2 just given to me by the staff, as they tire of looking at them.  Use the wood for knife handles, and working on crafts.
