Today out looking for scrap metal on garbage night me and a budy saw some steel shelves, witch was good. My jaw dropped when I saw a older snap on toolbox next to the steel shelving. I walk over to the box to find out its a snap on box but its got a little damage. Once I got it home I disocvered it is a Snap On KR-377A. The middle left side is dented in about four or five inches, not very pretty. The left side drawers do not work cause the damage. I am no body man or master mechnic but I am gonna try to get her fixed up and working. Ime thinking a little hammering here and there but then again like all my projects it never goes as planned. Any advice on this restoration?

Take ALL the drawers out of the box.
Now you can start straightening the box sides itself.
Wide vise grips really help here in getting all the sides straight.
Also now is the time to get all the trays straightened so they will slide easily.

Mrchuck is right, just take your time and you'll get it straightened out most likely.  Very cool find, hope to see some pics of it when you can.

Try pushing from the inside before you go hammering, hammering expands the metal, and if you expand it too much hammering on it, it will never go back into shape because it won't be able to fit in the space anymore, the dent will flatten out but refuse to go completly away. (The trick of making the metal smaller is 'shrinking', but now you are doing bodywork ;P)

If the metal is torn or crushed and wrinkled, you're going to have to get fancier tho...

Or try warranty..."hey, I dunno what happened..I was just sitting there and my snap-on toolbox suddenly went POP! and look at it now!"...

I was out in the garge for about 4 hours today. I got the drawers out and started. I pushed out the middle. I started to hammer a little, she might work now if I worked on the drawers as well. I still want to get the side in better shape, not just workable. She seems to be going easier then I thought.

Hopefully I will get a new camera soon, mines broke. Might get one tommorow, depends if I see any thing good at the flea market tommorow.

Stealing by finding...  It's illegal in my town, too, but receives about as much attention as driving 5 mph over the speed limit.  It's become  a corollary to the fine art and sport of dumpster diving.  I have a fine 1/2 inch drill, with the original warrantee card (unused, it seems) from one pile, and a terrific Makita 9 volt cordless from the piles.  A few other good tools as well.  Mmm... and a chestnut chest of drawers.  Few here are likely to call the police to say, "Somebody's stealing my garbage." 

Usually in our town if you put something good by the gargage on garbage night it will be within a few hours. Some people who scrap metal often have routes they take, people get cranky if your on there route. Sorta crazy how serious they get about it.

Anyway

I got the box all strightened out and drawers are good to go. I just have to get her painted and she will be a good box. I dont have room in the garge for her thoe, I gotta make room somewere.
