After pondering upon it for a bit I could make a guess.

If that bump at the bottom acts as a pivot point I am possibly on the right track. It all hinges on that.

There must be a door blocking the dark reassesses of my mind where the use of that tool resides...

I see it now. Staples left embedded in old fence posts are tough to get out! That tool gives you more leverage.

If you download the .tif file from the patent site most image editors like Irfan View will convert from .tif to .jpg.

Or you can reduce the size of the .pdf file to around 50 per cent, left click above the upper left corner of the patent picture and draw a box around it to highlight it. Then left click and copy (or control & C on the keyboard) and paste (or control & V on the keybord) in your image editor. This will give you a .clp file which you can crop, resize, name and save as a .jpg. That's what I did to get the pic below.

Two other ways to do it:

Cut/Copy  it, like Bus said, and paste it into irfanview (open irfanview with no picture), save as jpeg. Only drawback, can't be bigger than screen.

Use Imageprinter. Imageprinter is a printer driver that sends the thing you are printing to a picture file instead of a real printer. You can print at full resoloution from a pdf, and save in several file formats. only drawback is it is somewhat awkward.

(Third option, bug me, I have .tif's for most of the patents up to the 40's, 2500Gigabytes worth)

I save the "visible page" from the pdf to "My Pictures", then open with Irfanview or Picnic. There I can crop, resize, etc., and save as jpg . Easy upload to the post from there.
