No, that is the standard configuration for this wrench (and why I bought it). 

Steel City made electrical fittings, particularly conduit.....
So, likely targeted at the electrical trade for conduit assembly (The threaded pipe screw in type)

Is it about 8 inches long?

Nope.  11 1//2 inches long.

This one is on ebay but as Papaw suggested it has a longer outer jaw but is the same overall length.
