Had the outside gas line replaced at my mothers and this contractor guy used a metal rod shaped like a "L" to locate the gas line.
This rod was just a piece of metal and he was successful in finding the line with this method.  Claims the metal rod is pulled to the metal from the gas line.
Is this a bunch or BS?  What is this tools name?
Thanks

Never mind, you found out what the device was called, or never mind finding out it was a dowser was a satisfactory explanation?

never mind it's a dowsing rod

Bent metal coat hangers will do the same job,  and they are free.
