I saw him lead the Grand Entry Parade in the Houston Livestock Rodeo when I was a pre-teen. My Pop said he was drunk and cussing at the audience. Made me no difference, still listened to the music and watched the movies.

I'm so sorry to hear that. His music one of the only positive things I can remember from my young life. Sorry that it brought bad memories to you.

The bad  memory was my father's. As I said, I still enjoyed the movies and songs.

Many years ago I saw him driving down Hwy 99 in Sacramento.  Big car, license plate AUTRY.  Couldn't believe my eyes.
Apparently he h ad a problem with alcohol.  There was a story that he rode his horse into a meeting, stood in the stirrups
and lifted his hat... and passed out and fell off the horse.

But I remember his movies fondly,  and his songs as well.

Saturday mornings always, go to the movies. Village Theater.
Gene Autry was more popular because he fought in WW2.
Roy Rogers did not.
Our group would "always" wait for one of the actors to say "done petered out",,, and then in chorus,, we would yell out "who's peter's out"!!!!
Yes, our small group thought this was hilarious.
