Wood bearings will work, but roller skate wheels or small plastic wheels work better & develop less chatter on the wheel if the journals aren't bad. 
If the journals are bad you can remove the shaft real easy and sleeve them.

Once you get bearings under the wheel check for round.  If it's out the easiest way to bring it back is to rig up a Dumore setup with a small benchgrinder & linear bearings. 

Disclaimer: I know absolutely nothing about a benchgrinder set up on a pair of $300 shaft slider bearings that was driven back & forth by a windshield wiper motor.  I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, you can't prove nothing. 
I also don't know the job works best with an underslung water tub and piece of carpet dragging the wheel to remove grindings.

You can get the wheel within a few thousanths, and that's better than it started.

I would love that thing, I have fond memories of my grandfather sharpening something on a wheel like that. So long ago I can't remember what he sharpened, I do remember it had a water bath or something.

Yup, I was hatched out in S. Jersey (salem), don't remember much though.

Unfortunatly, it refers only to the metal parts ...

(A search of the inventors name brings up some interesting, if unrelated court cases, Edward was a bad boy ;P)

Edit: I am not certain there is only one Mason here, But, there are also interesting references to a fellow who  shows up in relation to Mason Motor company (spun off from the Maytag-Mason spinoff from Maytag co, when they gave up on making a car to make just washing machines) , and also gave up competing with Duesenberg...hmm

I have one complete sitting out in mommas flower garden ,been there twenty tears. A coat of paint once in a while and every time a kid shows up it gets some exercise   bob w.
