It's almost 22" long and the wood handle has very faint markings like it had a logo on it at one time.  If it were4" long , I'd guess it to be an old tubeless tire reamer, but there's no hook to put the plug in.

Can someone familiar with this thing tell me what it does. The tip does look a bit like a drill bit.

I think it is a tubeless tire tool. Reams the hole out so you can pull the old style plug in that has a metal covering over the tip that goes into the tire from the inside. You had to take the tire half off to gain access to the inside of the tire to install the plug.

Then, how long ago did they make them 22" long??  Today's plug installers that ai've seen are a lot shorter than this thing.

Not that I am saying that is what it is, 40 years ago tires had much taller aspect ratios. There were not 20 series tires on 22" rims back then.

I think this was made to make holes in what we call gypbrock and  what I think what you call drywall? (two sheets of cardboard with plaster in between).

I concur with the drywall tool.

It's a saw.  The gimlet tip drills into the material (they were used for more than dry-wall), then you can saw away, any shape needed.  Excellent for dry wall that is already installed.
