There is a VERY good reason those aren't seen every day any more.  That reason is OSHA.

Used to be one in the scrap yard of Kodak here, only one man in the yard was allowed to operate it, and he EARNED every cent Kodak paid him clipping scrap into 35" lengths all day 5 days a week.

One foot slip and he would have been a cripple in a second.
