Papaw, one of those Elgin wrenches was in some of my grandfathers stuff. It has a threading die in the round hole with a thin metal retainer to hold the die in. I have always wondered, were these made for a specific job? Or were they just a general purpose wrench?

Best I know, they were general purpose, and came in a bag with several dies. I have one with the retainer and one die, haven't tried to see if other dies might fit.
