It doesn't happen to roper Whitney does it?

Looks to be a sheet metal tool of some sort.
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

The Roper name to me is wood and gas ranges, but the handles and that big spring look almost like a veterinarian tool, at least a tool meant to be used one handed.  Does resemble a sheet metal tool, and got me completely scratching my head.

It looks like it was made to spread something.  But what that would have been...I have no idea.

Roper made a hole punch for sheet metal,  would that be able to hold 2 pieces of sheet metal together
to punch them evenly ?

just a thought.

To me, it is obvious this is a clamp, as the spring keeps it closed.

I'm leaning toward sheep metal work, as Roper made tools for such.

The mystery of March 17th has been solved! Last week's mystery tool is a Roper Whitney hand seamer used for crimping and seaming copper roofing sheets. The relative malleability of copper explains the lackluster clamping strength.

Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

Rusty, every so often I get blown away, and this time YOU'VE done it.  So do you have a photographic memory or merely 32 ex-hippies on call to search for the strange?   *he grins*

I have no idea what this is, but I'm thinking it would be good for grabbing pizza trays out out my pizza oven.

thank you everyone for your input, especially RUSTY,who is not rusty and is still working fine,

Thank keykeeper also, he used the magic word 'clamp', that was what I needed to find it :)

Sometimes a tool is not what it obviously is.

Trying to find it as 'pliers' was fruitless.

Because it isn't...

Mainly in Britain, based on my brief interweb search:

A mere £20.00, plus of course shipping.

Not sure what you feed them,  though.
