I have this vise that was given to me years ago by my best friend.  It was owned before him by his neighbor of many years, who was an artist that spared no expense in building frames for his paintings.  When he passed he left the tools to his neighbor, my good friend.   I've always wanted to make use of it, but I've never really had a good place.  I'm assuming it attaches to the underside of a bench/counter.  I had visions of a work "island" where it would be mounted.  I had to move it today, so I thought I'd share.  Not easy on the back at all.  It goes back into storage awaiting a new shop to be built.

They are made so you can attach a wood face to the jaws. Nice gift.

Thank you, Lewill.  I suspected that was the case given the way the jaws are made.  I would want a hard wood here?

It has a quick release, but it's action is from the bottom side on the threads.  It works much like the stop on my "chop saw", where you can flip about half the threads over and allow it to slide.  I'll get a picture.  The middle lever is for a stop.  Maybe this will help.

That would be a great thing to have on the end of the island, in the kitchen.   Be the right heigth,  in case you come up with a midnight woodwork idea.   Also make a fine pasta press, and 3rd hand for assembling a "Dagwood" sandwich!

That's a great idea, John.  I've built a special desk / bench and installed it in my (our) living room since that's where I live, rarely get visitors and out that big window is where the best view is.  And the Dagwood sandwich is a great idea too if I could find an uncluttered spot on my bench to set it.      Ralph
