This happens all the time, as you guys know I'm a collector of blow torches. Time and again I see, really rare, vintage, sort after, etc.

"RARE" on ebay.

I been selling on ebay for six months now and I never have seen one at yard sales in my neighborhood.

It MUST be "rare".

I am reminded of an old saying "there is a sucker born every minute" and I've added "and 2 to take him"

"Rare" usually followed by an exclamation point, is one of the most used and abused words on eBay.  The only one I hate more is "primitive," often spelled primative.   Some sellers I do believe use it to make people believe it is more valuable than it is, but other sellers I am convinced just don't know -- it means they haven't seen it at a flea market, and it's not in stock at the big box stores.  It still galls me, though.  If I see another 'L@@K! Rare primitive #5 wood shaver"  I think I'll gag.

Its not just eBay. I get it a lot at the flea markets. Usually goes something like this when i pick something up to inspect, that there is rare, I've never sold one like that before.

My favorite thing at yard sales and flea markets is when they tell me how much it is selling for on ebay. .. I usually walk away immediately!

My guess is that you're mis-reading it - I think it is for use by an odd, over 100 yrs old blacksmith who makes shoes by hand.  Who do you think makes steel toed footwear?

I am sure the old guy is rare ( and his name is Rumpelstiltskin, if he demands your firstborn.)
