 Looks like you have a depth stop for an auger bit. That patent should be 1904 not 1901 and model number is 49.

Yep, depth stop.  There's more than one size for depth stops, to accommodate everything from the 3/16 to the largest of the double twist bits.

Not the easiest critter to use...
