What brand is it? (game/give-away)
« on: April 06, 2014, 05:20:28 PM »
A neighbor down the road dug this up today and gave it to me. Don't know how long it will take to ID it but I thought we might as well have a little fun with. I've got a lil vinegar on it now to help break down the crud but I'm sure it will take more than that.
Anybody that wants to take a guess at what brand it is, you have 1 guess.
Winner gets a prize.

And the prize;

I'll go with Utica, but mostly for fun, cause that would really make it Danielson given the design timeframe ;P

Danielson made adjustables for at least a dozen companies...
So it will come down to what it is marked (pick any of several)

Only Danielson's jaws are truely square...

Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

The prize is from the stage of  Vise-Grip's development where the "fixed jaw" surface is held in with a rivet stud rather than welded in place.  You'll sometimes find these with a very wobbly jaw plate if the rivet got bashed or the stamped body deformed slightly due to extended use. Roughly WWII vintage.

Early 'Mole' grips in the UK had the same problem - in the 1960's we also had lots of cheap cruddy imports that deformed rather than grip... Mole grips were the bee's knees... By 2000 they were being made in Spain and re-imported back into the UK..

Interesting now (the parent company has been absorbed into Irwin) that they are being sold in the UK as Vice Grips..

There are a number of brands that can be ruled out right away (most, in fact)...

I'll go with J.P. Danielson.

Why would one leave a nice little adjustable in the mud?   I think I see something in the crusty bit, and say Diamond Caulk too.

Rusty, they you'd wind since you brought it up first......my fear is that whatever rust abatement plan ensues, that all the lettering will disappear anyway and it will say April Fools or something like that.....
