calling monkey collectors, what am I looking at?
« on: April 26, 2014, 06:19:54 PM »
Many here know a lot more about adjustables than I do. So, what brand, or maker am I looking at here? Not a mark on the thing. Looks like it wanted to be a Trimo, but different adjustment type. Most every Coes I've seen has a squared head on them, not like this one. Did a quick look though the Schulz book, I see nothing.

Any helpers out there?

The Collins I find on the internet are a different style than this too. I don't find this style in any MVWC auctions yet, but I haven't searched every single one of them yet.

Has Trimo characteristics, but don't think it is Trimo.

I have seen them before but can't remember who made them, kind of unusual design as the lower jaw is 2 pieces so it can be assembled around the support for the adjusting screw.

Look at lot # 689 of the Doug Busch auction on Wrenching News (Doug Busch 2010  -- http://s222.photobucket.com/user/buswrench/media/busch-2010/busch-683-694.jpg.html ) -- that one had PRR in a keystone logo & the "common understanding" is the Pennsylvania Railroad made these in their own shop at Alltoona.

Thanks Stan, I missed that one while looking through that auction. It makes a lot of sense to be made in PA as I found this one in Harrisburg PA. Strange some would have the logo and others don't.Maybe this one was made at 5pm on Friday...lol

If I recall correctly, the marking was a fairly light strike with a punch -- something that time, wear & and a bit of rust would easily obscure or obliterate.
If the P.R.R. was really diligent about keeping tabs on their hand tool inventory, there may not be very many of these available.
