old vice

This is the old vice we have on the farm, someone awhile back had posted one that was missing a part just wanted to show the one I got, the vice is original works great don't know how old but I know it was my grandpas cant find no #'s on it or size it is well used still today.

I will see ten blacksmith post vises like this without a name, before I see one with a name.   Champion, Keen Kutter, Arrow-Head, and others.   Does the post extend all the way to the floor?  Can't quite tell in the pic.   As for size, most of them open quite a ways but the width of the jaws is the size.  Three and a half inches up to six inches.  One of my six inch vises weighs 120 lbs.   I don't think we'll ever wear them out.

I like mine a lot.  Bought it from a blacksmith hobbyist.  Mine doesn't quite reach the floor, which I think is best because the pipe nipple that extends the leg takes any abuse. I have several vises close together; A post vise, a 4" or 5"standard bench vise, and a saw sharpening vise around the bench corner.  Other vises on my upstairs (jewelers) bench include a 2-1/2" clamp on, a 1" bench vise, and a GRS ring holder (by far the most expensive.) 

GRS makes an engravers vise and a riser for it to sit on.  It's on my to-buy list, but not near the top. Another vise on my buy list is a nice big 6" or even bigger bench vise. The kind with pipe jaws below the regular jaws. FIL has one, the handle must be 1"stock.

I use my post vise for anything I am going to seriously beat on that isn't anvil work.   It sure beats holding something with pliers and whacking on it while holding it on the concrete.

Columbian, yes.

 Also, Peter Wright, Indian Chief and Iron City made them.

I have a Columbian, an Iron City, and one unmarked.

Chilly, I have a friend that is an engraver. He had a GRS vise, but now has a Lindsay vise. Says it is much smoother in operation.

Thats good to know, as much as those cost I really need to check out some reviews before I buy.
