All I can say about the keyless chuck is that the first one I ever saw was a Makita.  Got a couple now, but I still have the keyed Makita I bought in '86.

Yeah!  I saw that after I posted.  The pic didn't show the chuck, so I wondered what it looked like.  Now I wonder why  keyless chucks weren't more common earlier.  Especially for the cordless drills -- I kept losing the dratted keys to my Makita, wandering around the 3000 sq. ft. scene shop when I was working theater.  I finally tied one to my holster, in addition to keeping a couple more in my tool box.
