I need some help with these 2 I'm stumped
« on: December 07, 2014, 07:31:14 AM »
I need some help with these 2 unknown maker wrenches. The first is a pipe wrench with a center screw that has a round pad for the lower jaw. The upper jaw is hinged and spring loaded so it stays close to the moveable jaw/pad. No markings the design is similar to E. Murphy Patent 460,591 Patented October 6, 1891. The patent states round jaws in several spots and this only has one round jaw.

The second is a combination nut and pipe wrench with a common jaw configuration but it is a quick adjust. I can't locate any patents that have all of these features.

Any suggestions?

hi Lewill2,
I went thru Shockley's 3 books this afternoon, wow.
not sure if I can help, but will give you my opinions, if I may.

PIPE WRENCH; 460591 is close, patented on Oct. 6, 1891. yes, it has 2 round contacts.
will get back to that later.

MONKEY/PIPE WRENCH:
746643 patented on Dec. 8, 1903 by John T. Myers, Gulmersville, PA and assigned
1/2 to Anton Hartig, Tarentum, PA

in the patent, the shape looks close, enen the outside curves of the top head. the real
change that I can see is the short lever to lock in the track is on the opposite side. your
picture shows it at the monkey side whereas the patent shows it on the pipe side.

this is only my observation of patents and the finished product.  the patent is issued on certain
aspects of the item.  I have wrenches with patent numbers on them and there are features on
the patent that is not on the wrench.
after they receive the patent, sometimes time goes by before they get to making the wrench
and they have changed their idea as how they want the finished product, or another way to
make it easier and cheaper.
NOTE; THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION.
you can check DATAMP for pat. #

if I find other info, I will pass it on. good luck,  Frank

Frank, Patent 746643 has a moveable upper jaw assembly that is spring loaded and slides inside the main bar. The lower jaw is part of the handle and main bar assembly. The wrench I have the lower jaw is moveable and slides on the main bar. The upper jaw is part of the main bar and handle assembly. I've looked through all 3 volumes of Shockley's books multiple times and still haven't seen anything that catches my eye.

Thanks for the reply

No help here.  Just wanted to comment on how nice that quick adjust wrench looks, well, they both look nice.  But I think that combination wrench is sweet.

I think they are both sweet, first time I've seen either one.
