axe or hatchet??
« on: November 17, 2015, 11:03:39 AM »
This handle is only 19 inches long. Would it be for some hatchet.... it's too short for an axe, right?

I would say it can definitely make for a great hatchet handle

19 inches is about right for those little "Scout Axes" that fit in a belt holster.  The handle looks like an axe handle, and the head looks like an axe head, but the size & weight makes it a one-handed tool unless you are under  4 ft. tall -- although you'd have to be a brave adult to let a 5 year old swing one.

Boy, Timmy( nephew) is just about the right size for this... maybe I'll give it to him for Christmas and see how quickly  my brother can disown me!!!!

Hatchets start at about 1/2lb and go up to 2 1/2lb with a short handle - axes tend to be 3lb to 8lb, with a longer handle - but at the cross over point the terminology is a little vague, e.g. a 2 1/2 lb carpenter's axe was a common tool in most tote boxes up to the 1960's...

If you really want to get into axes, there's several groups on Facebook, e.g. Axe Junkies https://www.facebook.com/groups/AxeJunkies/

Or take the middle ground and call it a hand axe.

Memory says there is a thread on here about a handle company.  Also says that company had a huge on line catalog with tons of information.

https://www.househandle.com/.  I have not yet used them, though I will be when I get around to rehandling my Maydole claw hammers, because they have octagon handles, the Only Right Handle Shape for a claw hammer.
