Large hook spanner

Hello, All. This was in the bottom of a box of tools that followed me home. Overall length is 19-3/4", span across the opening is 6", and the height is approx. 4-1/2" from the bottom of the handle to to the top of the arc. I believe it is malleable iron, rough finish. There is a recessed panel with the markings DR- maybe a 6 , plus one more letter or number. Farm or heavy equipment? Wood working machinery ?. Thanks, Lou

Hello, Looks too heavy & wide for a piston groover. I'm guessing that a lathe chuck spanner would have a round pin, not a hook. Thanks, Lou

My guess would be a spanner wrench for a large packing nut on a shaft.

Hello, Johnsironsanctuary. Thanks for the lead. I looked around and found a description for a Fixed Hook Spanner Wrench on the McMaster Carr web page:

Adjust collars, locknuts, rings, packing glands, adjustable rollers, power transmission bearings, as well as material handling and machine tool equipment.
 All are forged steel with a black finish.

Steamer outlets on hydrants - the hose couplings are lugs, pins, or often a bar that a wrench like that can grab.  The couplings are 4 -6"

But Chilly, why is a 5" called a Steamer connection?
Back in the days of steam pumpers their largest connection was 4" and that was only for hard hose used for drafting.

Don't know, out here we probably never had steam engines. If I had mentioned 4" and 6" storz connections it would have been more confusing.  We have jurisdictions that require storz for the building fdc's.

They're all twin 2½ going into a nice brass Wye here.
I continue to be amazed the local junkie scrappers haven't appropriated them yet.  Last year they harvested grave markers & the brass handrails at the County Office Building.  Amazingly they had no problem selling those hand rails intact at the scrap yard.  Sheriff had no problem getting the yard to give them back either.  The County Executive wanted them welded in when they were reinstalled.

Chilly, run by the Denver Firefighters Museum and measure up the fittings on Engine 17.
It's a steamer.
