Nice looking tool. Is that a flip up cover over the inside jaws?

Are those marks on the end 4 symbols or numbers?

Interesting!  I don't read Japanese, but the circle type symbol next to the 4 looks identical to a symbol I've seen on Japanese bayonets.

I almost hesitate to ask.......but what would an artillery caliper even be used for? Surely they didn't have to measure the size of the projectile and the size of the gun barrel out in the field to make sure they would fit, did they?
My friends call me Bob. My wife calls me a lot worse.

I was also curious as to the correlation.

for an idea as to the possible use of an artillery caliper, try this site about "ammunition inspection guide"

pattonthirdarmy.com/techmanuals/TM9-1904.pdf

some good info there in the booklet by the War Department - 1944
