little vise sitting in a pipe flange

Anyone recognize this little vise? (the one whose mount resembles an
ordinary pipe flange). I pried it off a bench at an estate sale last week,
almost rusted into oblivion.

Second picture shows it next to a (much more nicely finished) Starrett 86,
for comparison purposes.

I hadn't realized how many people made that pattern.  For a long time, I thought it was a Starrett exclusive.  I inherited a vise like that, but in hand vise mode (wooden handle), from my uncle, and thought it was a Starrett 86 until I started looking for the Starret logo - no luck!  Still a good vise.

The pipe thread mounting arrangement is clever - adaptable.

Oh, and let me express my envy that you've got the clamp-on base.  A Starrett 86 with the clamp-on base is on my vise quest list (I'm too old to have a vice quest list - I can barely handle the vices I already have! - a joke that may not make sense to any British members), along with a clamp-on or at least miniature Parker, Wilton, Prentiss...

Bill, if you really, really, want a Starrett vise they are still available. Complete with the bench mount and wooden handle, all in a nice Starrett box.

Standard tool made a hand vise similar to the one on the flange.  I don't think I've ever seen one with a bottom area that would take a piece of pipe. Nice find!

I bought the Starrett at the MWTCA national meet the year that it
was in Michigan City, Indiana, I believe. But I can't remember from
whom. And it came without the wooden handle, so it's bench-mount
only. And it cost too much even so. :)

The pipe-mounted one, on the other hand, cost only $0.50.
($1 per tool, half-price after 2 pm at one-day estate sales.)
Plus the effort with a pry bar to pull the thoroughly corroded
screws out of the bench top.

And therein lies the problem...really, really cheap.

I think mine came in a box lot at an auction, but it didn't have the bench mount, just the hand grip.
