Clamp?

A friend at the local hardware asked me to help ID these. He says the picture came to him from his son-in-law at whose job the boss has a "What's-It" every month and whoever IDs it gets an extra day off.
I can't tell you any more than you can see in the picture. The picture is from his cell phone to mine, and looks like it was taken through a glass case.

Looks like a pipe joint clamp.

My thought also. I told him that my first guess was a clamp to hold a standpipe and the ring might be asbestos or such to resist heat.

Reminds me of a home made clamp for piston rings.

I had that same thought but the round part looks to be fibrous.

It could be an older version of these:



When plumbers using lead & oakum made up cast iron joints on the horizontal, these were clamped around the pipe to keep the molten lead in place. It was poured in thru the little cut-out. When I was a kid, my job was tending the lead pot. Dad was like the last guy to switch to plastic!
