I would expect to see at least a couple of square nuts and bolts still on it if it was.

Well I'll be danged. I would never have expected to see hex nuts on something that old. I was under the impression that was a turn of the century thing or was Europe that much further ahead of us.

I'm just amazed at how many different vise patents there were from that era.
My friends call me Bob. My wife calls me a lot worse.

In this same vein, I have downloaded over 300 vise patents in total, and that is probably just the tip of the iceberg. Of course this includes not only bench vises but also machinists, wood workers, blacksmiths, quick opening and more.

Admittedly not all are from the same time frame as the Peter Wright but many are.

There is a small saw blade with shaft and bearings raised with the cargo of the Steamboat Bertrand,  Hex nuts, it sank in 1868, was real surprised to see them.    that is a very interesting vise, almost looks blacksmith made from a post vise.

Peter Wright was a prolific maker of blacksmith anvils and post vises.
Much sought after today.

The shape of the jaws had me thinking the same thing at first glance.
