Looking for Ideas
« on: November 05, 2017, 04:59:08 PM »
Hello, These 2 have been kicking around for a while. The one at top is about b7" long, I first thought it was a file handle, but the ferrule end is only about 1/2" deep, concave internally, and 3/8" in diameter. Possibly used to drive another tool??? The one at bottom looks like it may have been part of something else, chuck tightens by holding the larger wheel, or with a chuck key, barrel/shaft is hollow. Pin vise?? Part of a jeweler's lathe???? Thanks, Lou

You might be about right on the lathe chuck.  The ?steel? wheels are to keep momentum up.  Adds weight for a smooth, even rotation.

Judging from the ferrule, that looks like the handle portion of a Champion screwdriver. They used a ferrule design like that.

I would agree about the lathe chuck. The taper behind it looks about right for that size of machine.  Looks to be overall about the right size for a lathe I have here actually.

Hello, Mike. The ferrule is unique, well made, and there is solid metal at the bottom of the opening. A closer look tells me that something may have been snapped/sheared off from the original tool. Thanks, Lou

Hello, Bill. The wheels are not metal. At first I thought they were a hard rubber, but now I am thinking they are painted wood. Thanks, Lou

It looks like there is a groove above the wheel next to the chuck.  Maybe this was for a belt of some sort.  I was thinking of those drills that work with a bow and a string wrapped around a dowel.  That made me think that it could be a glass drill - hand powered.
