Odd Looking Hammer
« on: April 06, 2018, 10:40:30 AM »
Hello, I picked this up today, no visible mfg.'s markings . Looks to be modified by former owner, but I was wondering if this could have been made this way?? The lines are straight, & there is no evidence of the octagon head shape on the flat area. What would be the intended use?? Thanks, Lou

There is a cigar box hammer/tool that looks like the modified end.

Hello, I should have put some dimensions in there. It weighs 2 pounds 8 ounces with the handle. The head measures  1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 5-3/8" , with an octagon poll. I would not want to be the cigar box that this thing ran into!!!!!! Could that have been the design that the former owner copied??/ Thanks, Lou

Hello, I looked at quite a few hammers, and quite a few hammer patents, still nothing that looks like this one. The closest thing that I could find was aTinsmith's Tool, Patent No. 506,935. Regards, Lou

The tongue looks like it would be good for opening a folded seam on tin.   The working end  looks hefty and has sure seen some use.

Very interesting but I won't even guess. The conventional face shows deformation from heavy use which makes me think it was used on something heavier than common tinners work? The lines on the other end lead me to think it was made this way. If forged out from same as the other I would expect to see considerable evidence of hammering to shape. Can you detect any wear on faces of the modified end?
