Morse Taper Attachment???

Hello, I am trying to figure out what this is used for. Morse Taper shank, (3-1/8" long), The plate is 1-15/16" diameter, and is 1/2" thick. Looks like it is threaded to the taper shank, I don't want to take it apart just yet. Thanks, Lou

I've got the same question. Put the morse taper into the tailstock, but then what good is a flat plate?

Drill but goes in headstock
Attachment goes in tailstock
Hand-held (usually) work piece is pushed onto the rotating drill using the tailstock

Hello, The plate seems too small to back up anything held by hand, and it sounds like the safety & accuracy level is not there. I managed to get this apart, looks like a #2 Morse Taper  Shank x 1/2-20 Male Thread. I am guessing this is for a drill chuck, still can't figure out the plate. Regards, Lou

I have used a setup like this to hold a die and handle straight
and square to a shaft to start threads on the shaft when I didn't
want to single point a thread. Sometimes they don't want to start
Straight without a guide.

You won't find a real machine shop doing much drill press work in a lathe, but Atlas / Craftsman lathes were marketed to the home shop DIY crowd. I think I remember seeing this in the Sears catalog metal lathe accessories listed as a "pad center" for drilling. I bet you'll find its just economy mild steel. They also had one with a V-groove across face that in theory lets you drill a hole through center of a shaft.
