Mayhew Chisels

Hello, I have been trying to figure these out, but no luck. They are all stamped MAYHEW MADE IN U.S.A on the socket. I was unable to find any Mayhew chisels with a celluloid/plastic handle. The other thing is the , wondering if that is factory, or done by former owner? Thanks, Lou

Makes me wonder why they did not extend the shaft all the way up thru the handle so you would not be tapping the plastic portion with a hammer or mallet.

Hello, Yes , it looks like a poor design from here, too. I am still not sure if the handles are original, although the tangs end at the same spot on all 3 handles. Thanks, Lou

They appear to be slightly angled or is that just the photo?  Is it possible they were meant to used as firmer chisels?  That would explain why they don't have a shaft all the way thru.

Hello, Frank. There is a local distributor here in Syracuse, for Mayhew Chisels. The local guy has been doing business with Mayhew for 30 years, and he has never seen these. I am going to stop by the store and look through some of his old paper catalogs, there is nothing about these chisels online from Mayhew. If that fails, I will try to contact Mayhew, chances are that anyone who would have been around when these were made, has probably retired!!!!! Thanks, Lou
