PS&W or Sargent or?
« on: June 20, 2018, 02:12:13 PM »
Came across the bay ad below for a 4-position folding draw knife by PS&W.  I already have the same draw knife, exact in every respect except that mine has a nominal 10" blade.
Any of you folks know which company (or others) who made this tool?  I know the two were neighbors back in the day.

Not sure I understand your question...are you asking whether Peck Stow and Wilcox actually made it (rather than contracting it out), or are you asking who else made folding handle drawknives?

I've got a nice Greenlee folding handle knife, one of the cleanest tools I've ever purchased used; I believe a lot of folks made them.

Two folding draw knives, exact in every respect except for the blade length.  I just wondered if anyone here knows whether Sargent of PS&W made them--or whether a third company did.

Sorry, Bill.  I now see that my top post wasn't clear at all.  I just assumed that everyone here could read my mind!  I guess you can only read what I put in the message.
I have the Sargent; the Bay has the PS&W.  I would have guessed that both of those made their own goods.  I guess I guessed wrong.

Well, I didn't read your initial post comprehensively, or I'd probably have realized what you were saying more subtly than I caught.

The pivot style resembles what I've got on my Greenlee, but isn't quite identical.  There only but so many ways you can make a pivot like that.  Maybe one of the companies recognized that the other company's design was just right and, rather than making some subtle change, got permission for (or, if not patented, just borrowed/stole) the design from the originating company.

I have no idea how fierce the competition was.  If they were neighboring companies, they may have cooperated on stuff to fend off other companies.
