SK Tiger?
« on: August 02, 2018, 09:38:38 PM »
Help me sort this out, please.
Came home today with this late 30's S-K set.  Almost.
The inner lid logo shows:  TIGER  G/S  TOOLS
The breaker bar and crossbar are correct: 40253,  but the sockets are identical with those shown as S-K Brazil.

So, what have I got? Tiger by S-K?  And, if so, how are Tiger sets different from Brazil sets?

Don't have a  clue. The S-K connection sure looks undeniable.

Nice set, though!

TIGER was house brand for Gambles Stores (the G/S ) -- don't know how pervasive Gambles was but there was one in every town of significance in this part of the country (I'm in Nebraska) .  The Gambles in this town survived into the late 1970s - perhaps very early 1980s.   In their prime, they'd have stocked reasonably good quality tools made for them under contract.

These were clearly manufactured by SK.  Perhaps they simply went with what was in the warehouse.  The sockets would certainly fill in gaps in someone's Brazil set.  (perish the thought.)
BTW, that same sale netted me one of the first wrenches made by Hinsdale--from 1919-1921.  Mine is 15/16" by 1".  I really like that Hinsdale logo.

I believe I have a TIGER refrigeration ratchet out in the garage somewhere.
