Sears and roebuck - Craftsman chisel "rivet buster??" from 1978
« on: February 05, 2012, 04:11:09 PM »
Hello All,

My Dad has worked for many motoracing teams over the years and back in 1978 he was in the USA for a race.

Anyway, he picked up a very useful tool from a Sears store made by Craftsman. It's is a strange sort of chisel with the part Number 36833 and 1/2 inch on it.

We think it may have been a "rivet head buster" but We cant find the tool anywhere and wondered if there was somebody that may have a catalogue from 1978 so that could find the correct description of the tool so he can source another one similar. The one he has it getting a bit worn out but it is still very useful for Old racing cars But its the shape and size that makes it so useful.

I can supply pictures if needed but these will take a couple of days,

Many Thanks.

Welcome to Tool Talk!
I bet one of us has a catalog that shows that, or at least a PDF of it,

Welcome and show us a picture.
If its the kind of rivet buster I have, it can simply be re-ground and the mushroom taken off. Good as new

Hey Loony, tell us a bit about yourself. Where is home? What kind of racing was your Dad in? What kind of tools are you interested in?

All of the chisels that I found in my pdf collection were numbered 42xxx, but my newest was 1972. I am sure that someone will come along with a '78.

All the Cman chisels with 36xxx are wood chisels.

I was just about to say the same thing...

I can't find the number in my catalogues, but all mine are earlier than 1978. Still, it looks very much like the tool in question is wood-related!

Yep, that's actually a wood chisel...

The "WF" indicates it was manufactured by Western Forge - a long-time supplier of many hand tools to Sears...

Plumbers chisel
Stanley and maybe even Proto still make them. Any industrial plumbing supply the world around will have some for you.

An actual rivet buster is like a very heavy duty cold chisel (weighs 3 times as much as your chisel),
 except its bent.

Got a bit more time now, We both live in the UK, basically My dad worked for mclaren back in the 70's and when the mechanics got the chance to buy unusual and quality tools they took it. The choice in the Uk was nothing like the stores in the US in those days. Simple things like witney punches and magnetic angle finders were not seen in the UK or were very expensive..

This chisel was bought from a Sears in Long Beach along with a few other bits he could afford. Over the years he has picked up a lot of tools and we find the Craftsman (as I share some of them) Brand very good value for money. I was a race mechanic for a while but found I needed a more stable Career, I still do my own wrenching on my Harley and our car and anything else really that breaks.

The chisel itself was very handy to pop the heads off rivets, if a car had a prang they would need to swap panels as quickly as possible and the chisel was the perfect size and shape to get in awkward areas.

They dont need the tool as much these days and it has been sharpended alot in its time and I think they just wanted a back up in case, I know one of the other guys wanted one of his own. After quite a lot of searching it turned into a mission to find a replacement and with you guys help I am one step closer.

So thanks to all that have helped. It is very much appreciated. I will post back with more news, in the meantime if anyone has a direct link to a store that sells the chisel I would be grateful.

Closeset one so far is by proto stanley.

Even if Sears still sold that style of chisel, you probably wouldn't want it anyway; the quality of Craftsman tools has declined considerably since your chisel was purchased.

You'll be better off looking for an older replacement like:

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/200628036399

or

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/280748517786

Here's a link to an auction that's still live with a 1/2" & a 3/4":

http://www.ebay.com/itm/140696996802

You'll want to search for "All-steel wood chisel" or "Plumber's chisel" or Electrician's chisel" or some combination thereof...

Mayhew is a highly-regarded USA chiselmaker who used to make an 830-series that was similar.

Here's an older set by them:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/180814283398

Best of luck!

(Post up some shots of the stuff your Dad used to work on...)
