What a way to spend a Saturday
« on: March 06, 2013, 04:06:56 PM »
Local auction to sell a bunch of planes, cast iron seats, wrenchs and such like. Guess I'll have to attend even though I've given up plane collecting. They haven't really stressed the wrenchs but may be a sleeper or two.  Anyone interested in specifics can get listing and photos at (Auctionzip area code 61910) Owner did not clean the tools up so maybe us bottomfeeders may find a morsel or two.
A little skittish about my evaluation skills since I bid $65 on a Moon wrench recently and saw one sell for less than $30 on ebay last week. Didn't get the high priced one and forgot to check my watch list on cheap one. auction is sat Mar 9. Location near Arcola,Il.

My heart goes out to you - what a dreadful way to spend a weekend day!  You poor soul.

Have I poured it on enough?

Hope you find some gems that no one else notices.

Remember to take the truck or a van, just in case you're the only tool guy to show.   It happens.

Boy, that would sure never happen around here.  In this area, the tool guys have to take turns breathing to all fit in the room.

Same here. There will be bidders from 2 or 3 states and a lot of local collectors and dealers. Don't expect a lot of bargains. I normally pick a couple of items and marshall my resources for them. Doesn't always work;my $275.00 bid on a wrench at one of last years sales was only good for second place. I didn't bid on the $900 plus IHC wrench or the $1100 plus oil sign (OWL OIL). Sale held in country and there will be several buggies.

Spent 4 1/2 hours at auction today. Got the Stanley 79 I had my eye on but the 95 got out of my price range. Was interested in the 5 1/4 C until I saw it :some caring former owner drilled a hang hole thru the front of it so he could hang it up and admire it. A terrible job of drilling but once you drill a hole it doesn't make any difference what kind of hole you  drill. Did get the 5 1/4 in photo for $6; maybe because the iron was assembled backwards. Got a few wrenchs but thats another story.
Got home in time to put  a rear end in a recliner. Who says these tools aren't useful.

Jim, do you know if that is an original lever cap on that 5 1/4. I was under the impression that pebbled caps only came on Stanleys wood bottom planes but I don't know if is the truth.

 Gibson tool,
You are correct in that the lever cap is for a wood bottom. Haven't really checked this plane out;just thought it was worth six dollars.
