The "All Others" Pipe Wrench Thread
« on: September 28, 2013, 03:08:05 PM »
I don't think I have obscured my desire for collecting pipe wrenches from the forum, but I've really never taken the time to share them outside those of the Ridgid brand.  That will now change, and it will start with my most recent.  This 14" HD Smith coming from JohnK.  I very much appreciate having it home.  I can now see why a person would want to have HD Smith tools around.

I'm hopeful, given the HD Smith expertise on the forum, that I might gain assistance with determining it's age.

Best I can do is say they went out of business in 1930 and the wrench line was taken over by the Trimont MFG Co.
They began producing wrenches in about 1902, from patents of 1901 and 1905. The pipe wrench patent was Dec 29, 1914.

Thank you, Noel.  Pardon the following questions if they seem silly, I just haven't seen enough specimens to answer it.  Are there differences in the styles of HD Smith pipe wrenches over the years of manufacture, or does one look identical to another?  Based on your answer is it fair to assume the years of HD Smith pipe wrench branding were from around 1914 through 1930?

In my experience, they are all much the same. Trimo made some changes when they took them over.
