Anyone know what this Old Forge tool is for?
« on: October 05, 2013, 11:12:32 PM »
It is 9 3/4" long.  I can't find anything under the patent number that is on it.  Wondering what it is for and what it is called?

Thanks,
Barb

This is called a muffler chisel, in places I have worked.  The fin on the back is for slitting the outer pipe, when driven between the inner and outer pipes.  Regular  chisels get wedged in place.

Panel slitter.
Smart man starts from a hole in the center of the cut, drops the cutter in and cuts in both directions from the hole.

My preference is one driven by an air hammer.

The patent shows a different tool, but probably is just the maker taking liberties, it is a hammered cutting tool, the cutting edge is just 90 out from your tool (listed as a bushing removal tool, for cutting inside sleeved bushings)

Patent is from 1939

PS: a comment on old tools describes the one shown in the patent, marked with the same name and patent number (but marked 172A), so there are 2 types with that patent, 172A, and 72B...hmmmm

Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

Thanks Rusty!  I looked up that patent but did not think it could be the same one.  Good to know.
